Name: Gigi Avery
Major: Biology
Graduation: 2026
I am from the best state ever... Virginia! My family lives about an hour away from DC and we've been to just about every historical site in Virginia/ Washington DC you could imagine. I'm a junior at BYU and have finished everything in the honors program except for the LDE (I'm in HSLC right now) and the Thesis. I am currently working as an advisor for the honors program and loving every minute of it! I also love to travel and have been to 22 countries. My goal is to go to every country in the world, which I know is crazy, but dream big right?
What's one item on your bucket list?
Ride a hot air balloon in the Albuquerque New Mexico Hot Air Balloon Festival.
What sparked your interest in your major?
It was originally a placeholder while I decided what I wanted to do, but now I love the classes and it's a great way to get the pre-requisites done for grad school!
Why did you decide to join the Honors Program?
When my mom and I toured BYU during my freshman year, we talked to an advisor. She told us all about the unexpected connections courses and the thesis and as my mom and I were walking out of the Maeser building, we looked at each other and said at the same time "I have to do this!" I've never looked back since!
What has been your favorite Honors experience?
It's hard to pick a favorite part of the Honors program because I love it all, but if I had to choose, it's HONRS 320 for me! The Great Questions Essay truly changed my life and perspective. I loved researching a question I have been thinking about for a long time and growing through the process of writing an essay about it.
What is your next step in Honors?
My next step in Honors is finding a thesis topic and starting research for my thesis.
