Yali Zegarra Calderon

Name: Yali Tarek Zegarra Calderon
Major: Political Science
Graduation: 2027

I come from immigrant parents from Peru. My father is from the beautiful small port town of Matarani in Arequipa and my mother is from Lima Peru in Santiago de Surco. Growing up I learned about my parent's culture and traditions, and we spoke Spanish and ate amazing authentic food. I'm very proud of my culture and I have tried to follow what my ancestor had done. My goal is to become an immigration lawyer so I can help other immigrant families. In my spare time I enjoy trying new things.

What's one item on your bucket list?

To visit Peru and learn more about the culture and my ancestors.

What sparked your interest in your major?

My family and the experience of many immigrants.

Why did you decide to join the Honors Program?

At first, I was very hesitant to join the Honors Program since I already took some rigorous courses in High School. As I was preparing for college, I received an email about joining the Honors Program. After a praying about it and pondering about joining the Honors Program, I've received a prompting to do it. After following that prompting I never regretted my decision to join.

What has been your favorite Honors experience?

My favorite experience so far was a presentation by Professor Christopher Lynn last semester in my HONRS 120 class. He talked about breaking barriers with art and his presentation really changed my perspective how I see art now. It was amazing to see how he was able to articulate his presentation to help us understand the importance of breaking your own barriers.

What is your next step in Honors?

My next step hopefully is to do one more unexpected connection course and be part of the Honors Leadership Council so I can help innovate the program even further!
