Briefly tell us about yourself and your passions: Hello, I am Timo Blankenbehler, an incoming freshman majoring in Political Science on a Pre-Law track. I love to hang out with friends and watch sports. In my free time, I often go to the gym, cook, or study for my classes. I hope to one day be a successful lawyer with a happy family, being able to support my family from my dedication in school and work.
Why did you decide to join the Honors Program?
I often struggle with creativity, and by taking classes that require abstract thinking, I can find connections I would have never had thought of before. Also, past alumni have told me their regrets of not being in the Honors program, and I do not want to miss out on this opportunity. Finally, being in Honors will help me in my path to Law school, since it would put me in a group of the most devoted students on campus, surrounding me with dedicated and forward-thinking students.
What sparked your interest in your major?
My interest in this major was sparked by the realization of monopolistic corruption from my AP Human Geography class in my freshman year. My goal in my major is to become a lawyer that protects small businesses and promotes the battle against monopolies. Interestingly enough, the last time a monopoly was broken up was 1982, despite the fact that businesses are more economically polarized now than ever. Perhaps by taking a stand, I can make a difference.
What are three things that can always be found in your pantry/refrigerator?
Three things that will always be in my pantry and refrigerator are chicken breast, non-fat plain greek yogurt, and apples. The chicken breast comes from my need to get protein to stay full throughout the day. Particularly during wrestling, I had chicken breast everyday and it kept me strong. Non-fat plain greek yogurt is a necessity since it can almost be used in everything. Ranging from a substitute for sour cream to a probiotic rich breakfast snack (especially when mixed with honey, vanilla extract, and fruit), its a great go-to option. Finally, and most importantly, apples will always be found in my pantry. Growing up, I always loved apples. I ate anywhere from 4-6 apples daily, until I got sick and the doctor restricted me to two a day. Although I won’t be able to eat as many apples anymore, I will surely have one or two a day.
If you could instantly master any skill or talent, what would it be and why?
If I could instantly master a skill, it would definitely be public speaking. I wouldn’t say that I am poor at the skill by any means, but mastering the skill would take my career, leadership qualities, and communication skills to a whole new level.
What are you looking forward to at BYU this fall?
This fall, I am looking forward to meeting new people, finding answers to religious questions, and attending sports games. I am quite sociable, so finding new friends is always a lot of fun for me. Whether it is from parties or classes, I love to hang out. Religion is quite important to me, and by being in a more spiritual situation, I can learn more about my future in religion. Finally, I have not been able to attend many sports games from the stands, since I was a two-season sport athlete and I worked long hours in the spring. By having less going on I can connect more with the BYU culture and have a blast at sports events.
