Amy Griffin
Majoring in Communications
April 2022

My name is Amy and I'm from Highland, Utah. I grew up playing with cameras and computers, so it was pretty natural for me to go into communications, specifically digital media. But I'm not planning on sticking with journalism--working on my Honors Thesis has opened me up to the world of research and I think I've found my home! I'm looking at the portrayal of women in media and how that impacts local elections--it's been cool to me to see how many different directions I can go with communications research. I also love being outside--especially camping and hiking--and got married about six months ago (to a guy I met at Late Summer Honors back in 2017!).

What's one item on your bucket list?
I have every intention of giving a TED talk one day. No idea what it will be about, but I'm going to do it.

If there was an Olympics for everyday activities, what activity would you have a good chance at winning a medal in?
Without a doubt: stress cleaning. I am the stress cleaning QUEEN. Got a paper due at midnight? You'll catch me scrubbing the fridge until 11:00.

Why did you decide to join the Honors Program?
When I took a tour of BYU campus, the guide told me I could "get done faster" by taking Honors Unexpected Connections courses. I thought that sounded pretty great, but before I knew it I was hooked--and taking enough classes that I actually extended my time here at BYU instead of shortening it.

What has been your favorite part of your Honors Experience?
I think my favorite experience (obviously besides the part where I met my husband thanks to the program) was Dr. Call and Dr. Gill's Evolution class back in fall of 2017. We took a camping trip to Canyonlands and also did some neat stuff with applying a biological software to literature themes. It just blew my mind that there were so many connections between things that I previously hadn't associated with one another.

What is your next step in Honors?
On to my thesis! I'm hoping to have my proposal in by the end of October and hopefully start researching during Winter semester.
