Opportunities to Share Your Work

There are many opportunities for Honors students to publish written and creative work, whether it's a research paper, beautiful photo, or your Great Questions Essay. You can publish just for fun, to compete for an award, or to build your academic resume. We've compiled a list of venues both on and off campus that publish student work. Check the list and links below for deadlines and more information, and if you get something accepted, please let us know!

Scribendi
Scribendi accepts works from current undergraduate Honors students in creative nonfiction and short fiction under 5,000 words, poetry, visual arts, and open media. The submission deadline is mid to late October for publishing the next spring. https://scribendi.unm.edu/

Palouse Review
Honors students are eligible to submit short fiction, nonfiction, poetry, music, photography, and digital multimedia projects. They suggest 5,000 words or less for all essays and short stories. The deadline is April 1 for publication in the May 1 edition. https://palousereview.wsu.edu/submit/

Marriott Student Review
The Marriott Student Review is a student journal revolving around current events. Submit articles, book reviews, interviews and more business-related works for an opportunity to be published and share your thoughts with fellow students and faculty. https://marriottstudentreview.org/about-us/ or

BYU Studies – Poetry and Essay Contests
Submit your poetry and personal essays to BYU Studies by January 31, 2023 to be considered for a $1,500 first place, $1,000 second place and $500 third place prizes in each category. The Clinton F. Larson Poetry Contest accepts poems of any subject less than 35 lines, and the Richard H. Cracroft Personal Essay Contest is looking for essays with a religious element under 3,000 words.

UReCA: The National Collegiate Honors Council’s Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity
A national journal for Honors students by students, UReCA is an excellent place for creative works such as a personal essay. Submissions are currently being accepted and will close September 1, 2022. https://nchcureca.com/

BYU College of Humanities Journals
There are many student journals in various categories within the humanities. Provided here is a link to a list of journals, including those on philosophy, American studies, literary criticism, Hispanic language and culture, creative writing, and linguistics. https://humanities.byu.edu/student-journals/

American Scholar
The American Scholar is a quarterly magazine published by the Phi Beta Kappa Society. They accept fewer than 2% of unsolicited manuscripts, but there is a $500 incentive for accepted nonfiction essays of no longer than 6,000 words.

Inscape Journal
The BYU English Department sponsors creative writing throughout the year and also manages the journal Inscape. They accept poetry, non-fiction, and fiction under 7,500 words, and submissions are accepted year-round.

BYU English Awards and Contests
The BYU College of Humanities provides several short fiction, poetry, and essay contests, open from November 1 to January 15.

The Adroit Journal
The Adroit Journal is currently accepting fiction, nonfiction, and art submissions. They accept essays of up to 9,000 words, and will open up to poetry submissions later in the year. https://theadroitjournal.org/about/submissions/

Kay Snow Writing Contest
Annual writing contest for poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and screenplays. Submissions open November 2022, and in addition to cash prizes, authors of the top three entries in each category receive admission to the Willamette Writers Conference in August, where they and their writing are honored.

Narrative Magazine
The Narrative Magazine accepts poetry, non-fiction, fiction, and more. There is no length limit, and they accept submissions year round. There is a fee for any interested in the $4,000 Narrative Prize, but if you are just looking for a place to publish, there is no submission fee in the first two weeks of April.

Diana Woods Memorial Award in Creative Nonfiction
The Lunch Ticket Journal is accepting essays under 3,500 words for publication and a $250 award in honor of author Diana Woods.

ServiceScape Short Story Award
If you are interested in publishing a short story of 5,000 or fewer words, submit to ServiceScape. You will not only have the chance to get your work published on their blog, but there is a $1,000 reward offered as well. Submissions are due November 29, 2022.

Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest
Submit a humorous poem for the chance to win a prize ranging from $2,000 to $100 for the top 12 entries, which are also published online in the Winning Writers newsletter. Poems should be fewer than 250 lines long, and submissions are due April 1.

Creative Nonfiction Magazine
Creative Nonfiction draws heavily from unsolicited submissions, and all types of creative nonfiction are welcome, including personal essays.

Narratively
Narratively accepts works that tell “original and untold human stories” that include a shift in perspective throughout the piece. They are looking for pieces between 1,500 and 4,000 words, and they offer an incentive of 9 cents per word for published writing.

Integrative Pathways Newsletter
This newsletter is looking for interdisciplinary projects like those produced in your Honors classes! They are looking for pieces around 2,000-2,500 words in length. Long Story Short Award
Have you seen the Short Story Dispenser in the HBLL? Would you like to see your work printed for interested students, faculty and staff? Short Edition invites students to submit short stories, poems, and creative nonfiction of less than 7,500 characters to their inter-university contest. Submissions for this year closed Feb 21, but it is an annual event, so keep it in mind for next year! Winners in each category receive $500, but all submissions are considered for publication online and in their Short Story Dispensers!
