Honors Weekly Highlight!

Marissa Miller

Marissa is an Honors student who is graduating in April, 2018 majoring in Sociology and minoring in International Development. Marissa completed her Honors Experiential Learning through the Program Evaluation and Assessment Team (PEAT) internship through the department of Sociology. This program measures the effectiveness of supplementation and nutritional education on malnourished children in the Philippines. Marissa and her team worked on developing the details of the trial and going through the process of getting International Review Board approval over the course of the 2016 school year. They spent May through August 2016 in the Philippines setting up the trial and training local coordinators on how to continue to gather the report data once they had left the field. Marissa and her research partner were able to present their experimental design at the Pacific Sociological Association Conference in April 2017.

Join us this Friday for our weekly Chocolate Milk Discussion with Dr. Samuel Otterstrom of the Geography Department.  Dr. Otterstrom is one of our amazing Alcuin Honors Fellows, and also serves as the Honors Coordinator for the Geography Department. He received his BS and MS in Geography from BYU and his PhD from Louisiana State University.  His research focuses on Historical Geography of the U.S., population and settlement Geography, Genealogy and Geography, and urban Planning.  Invite a friend and bring them to this great event!

Disciple Scholar Next Week!

Our October Disciple Scholar Lecturer will be Dr. David Dollahite, a professor in the School of Family Life. Professor Dollahite teaches classes and conducts research on the links between religion and family life, particularly in the Abrahamic faiths, Latter-day Saint family life, and faith and fathering. He has twice been an Eliza R. Snow University Fellow and has served as an associate director of the School of Family Life.  He is co-director with Dr. Loren Marks of the American Families of Faith Project, in which 201 Christian, Jewish, and Muslim families from 17 states have been interviewed. Findings from this ongoing project have resulted in more than 50 scholarly journal articles.  Don't miss this inspiring and educational evening!



Honors Director's Bike Ride!

All Honors students is invited to come on a casual bike ride through the beautiful Provo West Trail with the Honors Program Director, Spencer Magleby.  This is your chance to get to know our Honors Director and to have fun.  Meet on the east side of the Maeser building and come early at 9 AM if you want Dr. Magleby to check your bike and pump up tires.  The bike ride will start promptly at 10:00 AM so please be here by 9:45 AM to be ready for the bike ride. The weather will be cool so dress appropriately.
